NPP MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya was sworn in as the new prime minister of Sri Lanka yesterday at the Presidential Secretariat by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. This makes her the country’s sixteenth prime minister.

In addition to being sworn in as Prime Minister, she was also appointed Minister of Justice, Public Administration, Local Government and Labour, Provincial Councils, Education, Science and Technology, Women, Child and Youth Affairs and Sports, Trade, Commercial, Food Security, Co-operative Development, Industries and Entrepreneur Development, and Health.
The third female prime minister of Sri Lanka was also Dr. Amarasuriya. Following the assassination of Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s husband, S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, the late Sirimavo Bandaranaike assumed the role of the first PM in history. Her daughter Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga held the position of prime minister in the middle of the 1990s before winning the presidency.
