The International Monetary Fund expressed its appreciation on Monday for the announcement last week of an agreement in principle to restructure $12.5 billion in bonds between Sri Lanka and a group of its international bondholders. The fund also expressed its eagerness to collaborate with newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
“IMF to work with the new president of Sri Lanka; creditor agreement is welcomed”
An email from a fund representative stated, “We look forward to working together with President Dissanayake and his team towards building on the hard-won gains that have helped put Sri Lanka on a path to economic recovery.”
The fund stated that it will talk to Sri Lanka “as soon as practicable” on when to have its third review of the present program.
