Colombo Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith last week declared that Pope Francis has approved the continuous battle to find the truth about the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

During a holy ceremony honouring the 150th jubilee feast of St. Maria Church in Negombo, the Cardinal observed that four years have passed since the Easter Sunday assaults. “Yet, we have not been able to ascertain the truth. No leader has actually endeavoured to find it. We do not want revenge or retaliation but justice. It is our right to know the truth, and no political leader should be able to deny us that right,” he said.

Pope endorses battle to learn truth of Easter massacre: Cardinal

He said that Pope Francis has expressed his solidarity with the victims’ families and asked Sri Lankan authorities to expose the truth behind the assaults, which he believes would open the road for peace.

Cardinal Ranjith noted that Pope Francis just conducted a 12-day apostolic travel to Asia and Oceania, visiting Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Singapore. “I had the opportunity to meet the Pope last week. He enquired about the progress of the Easter Sunday investigations. I reacted to the best of my ability. The Pope implored us not to quit our pursuit for truth and justice for the victims of Easter Sunday. According to our conversations, the country is at a key point. We are prepared to shape our nation’s future on September 21. This day is crucial, and we should remember what happened on April 21, 2019, when we go to vote,” the Cardinal said.
