In light of the impending presidential election, the US Department of State has modified its travel recommendation for Sri Lanka and advised people to proceed with care.

The alert emphasises that there may be protests leading up to, during, or following Sri Lanka’s September 21, 2024 presidential election.

“Police have occasionally used tear gas and water cannons to scatter protestors. It said, “Americans are reminded to stay away from all gatherings, even quiet ones, as they have the potential to degenerate into violent incidents at any time.”

Additionally, when visiting tourist destinations and crowded public spaces, citizens visiting Sri Lanka during this time frame are advised by the US State Department to be mindful of their surroundings, obey local authorities’ instructions, keep an eye on local media for breaking news, modify their plans in response to new information, and stay away from crowds and demonstrations.

Sri Lanka, which has 22 electoral districts and more than 17 million registered voters, is preparing for the much anticipated presidential elections on September 21, which will include 38 candidates running for the office.
