Pope Francis arrived at Vanimo, Papua New Guinea, and was welcomed in a traditional feathered headpiece known as the Bird of Paradise.
At the request of local Catholic Institute of the Incarnate Word missionaries, he travelled to Vanimo. They are from Argentina, just like Pope Francis, the first pope to be born outside of the Americas.
“In Papua New Guinea’s remote Vanimo, Pope Francis is welcomed.”
He had celebrated Mass earlier, in front of at least 35,000 people, in Port Moresby, the capital.
As part of a journey that started in Indonesia, Pope Francis is in Papua New Guinea till Monday. After that, he goes to Singapore and East Timor before going back to Rome.
