Yesterday morning (06), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that twenty Sri Lankans who had been saved from a cyberslave camp in Myanmar had returned home.
Twenty more Sri Lankan citizens were freed earlier on August 15th from cybercrime camps in the Myawaddy region of Myanmar. These people were securely moved to Thailand, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Thailand took charge of them.
According to Ministry sources, on August 15, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, the ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, travelled to Mae Sot, Thailand, to meet with the rescued Sri Lankans and enquire about their well-being.
“Returned are 20 Lankans saved from a cyberslave camp in Myanmar.”
Eight of the 56 Sri Lankans imprisoned in cybercrime camps in Myawaddy were first freed by government officials in Myanmar at the beginning of March. The 18th of April, 2024, saw their safe return to Sri Lanka.
34 Sri Lankan citizens are reportedly still being detained in cybercrime camps in Myanmar, nevertheless. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aggressively negotiating the release of the remaining Lankans with the appropriate countries through the Sri Lankan embassies in Bangkok and Yangon.
These people had come to Myanmar in search of work abroad, but they had not followed the correct processes for working abroad. According to the Ministry, after entering the nation on tourist visas, they fell prey to human trafficking after being drawn into cybercrime. In order to prevent becoming a victim of human trafficking, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised the people to proceed with caution and compliance with the relevant protocols when looking for work overseas.
