The National People’s Power (NPP) was first approached by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs who quit the government and have since formed an alliance with Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the main opposition party, according to its leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.Speaking on Thursday, August 8, at a function in Gampaha, Dissanayake stated that the NPP had rejected this group of lawmakers.
“Claiming AKD, SLPP MPs approached NPP prior to SJB and promised an anti-crossover law.”
Three factions now make up the SLPP: the president Ranil Wickremesinghe faction, the MP Namal Rajapaksa faction, and the opposition leader Sajith Premadasa faction. Many of them came to our door by knocking before heading to the SJB. How did we proceed? Dissanayake remarked, “We said ‘ayubowan’ and told them that their record is not that good.”The leader of the NPP asserted that the visiting MPs were shown the door after being plainly informed that they represented a party that was alleged to have engaged in corruption and the spread of racism.
He quoted an NPP spokesperson as saying, “We appreciate you knocking on our door, but we are unable to let you in.”
In addition, Dissanayake mentioned the name of MP Nalaka Godahewa, one of the SLPP lawmakers who has endorsed SJB leader Premadasa for president.Dissanayake went on to say that legislation prohibiting lawmakers from switching sides will be introduced by an NPP government in the future. One day, this politics of hopping from one side to the other has to end. It can only be stopped by a movement that refuses to accept those who jump,” he stated.”We promise that this will be the last time they jump. If they cross over, a law that sends them home will be draughted by an NPP government.
This is what tainted the politics of this nation. Once in power, they act in ways that are detrimental to the public and pursue opposition politicians as they see fit. Our greatest disaster to date is this, he declared.
