In the upcoming presidential election, the Nimal Siripala de Silva faction of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has chosen to back President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

SLFP disagrees over whom to back

At a meeting on Tuesday in Colombo, the government’s majority of SLFP MPs, who were chosen from the SLPP, gave President Wickremesinghe their support. Along with other representatives of his group, Nimal Siripala was also present at this meeting.Dayasiri Jayasekera, the MP, announced that his faction’s electoral organisers would convene on Saturday to determine which candidates to back.Right now, Jayasekera and the De Silva faction are engaged in a legal dispute over who controls the party.

He declared, "I don't think it is wise for the SLFP to field a candidate."

But Sajith Premadasa, the leader of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has the backing of the Humanitarian People’s Alliance (Maanushika Janatha Sandanaya), under the leadership of Jayasekera.The SLFP’s Maithripala Sirisena faction has chosen to back Wijyadasa Rajapakshe as their presidential candidate.
