“Nuwara Eliya farmers hand over potato harvest to the government”
Providing immediate solutions to the marketing challenges faced by local potato farmers, the government decided to implement a special program to purchase domestic potato harvests at a fair price, effective from the 10th.
Accordingly, a program is currently underway at the Cooperative Agricultural Produce Collection Center in Blackpool, Nuwara Eliya, to purchase potatoes at a fixed price of Rs. 220 per kilogram. This is subject to a maximum limit of 1,000 kg per farmer per day.
Despite the prevailing adverse weather conditions, farmers in the area are actively delivering their harvests to the center. Arrangements are already being made to transport these stocks daily—purchased directly from the farmers—to be sold to consumers at subsidized rates through the island-wide Lanka Sathosa retail network.
Through this initiative, farmers are ensured a fair price for their produce without the influence of middlemen, while consumers are given the opportunity to purchase high-quality local potatoes at a reasonable cost.
