Fake Bureau official remanded in Korean E-8 job scam

Officers of the Special Investigation Division of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) arrested an individual on March 5th for posing as a regular employee of the Bureau and defrauding people by promising E-8 employment opportunities in South Korea.

The Bureau received two complaints stating that a resident of Peradeniya had claimed to be a Bureau employee capable of securing South Korean E-8 category visas. The suspect had reportedly demanded Rs. 3.4 million for the process, but failed to provide the promised employment after receiving the funds.

Following a targeted investigation, the suspect was arrested in the Mirihana area. During the arrest, officers seized several E-8 visa application forms found in his possession. Investigations revealed that the suspect had orchestrated the scam by summoning victims to the front of the Bureau premises to create the false impression that he was an employee, despite having no official connection to the institution.

After being produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court, the suspect was ordered to be remanded until March 12th.

The raid was carried out under the instructions of Chief Inspector P.B. Ariyasinghe, OIC of the Bureau’s Special Investigation Unit, and conducted by Inspector T.B. de Alwis, Police Sergeant Dissanayake, and Law Enforcement Officer Amitha Kumari.
