In honour of the 78th National Independence Day (04), the President has decided to grant a special presidential pardon to 49 inmates, exercising the powers vested in him under Article 34 of the Constitution.

According to the Department of Prisons: Inmates currently serving sentences will be granted a remission of one week for every year already served.

Inmates serving prison terms due to the non-payment of fines less than Rs. 75,000 will have the remainder of their sentences cancelled.
