Inauguration of a tea fertilizer subsidy under the QR system

The inaugural program for providing the fertilizer subsidy to small and medium-scale tea plantation owners through the QR system was held recently in Welipenna.

The Tea Board has allocated Rs. 2,000 million for the year 2025 to provide this subsidized tea fertilizer through a new mechanism, with the goal of increasing Sri Lanka’s annual tea production to 400 million kilograms by 2030. The Small Tea Holdings Development Authority and the Sri Lanka Tea Board plan to distribute this Rs. 2,000 million worth of fertilizer specifically targeting small tea plantation owners, who produce 75% of the country’s green leaf.

Under this project, a subsidy of Rs. 4,000.00 will be given for a 50 kg fertilizer bag and Rs. 2,000.00 for a 25 kg fertilizer bag. The new program provides beneficiaries with a QR code, which allows them to obtain the approved fertilizer from numerous companies registered with the Fertilizer Secretariat, including the government fertilizer company. The procedures for purchasing fertilizer under this new system will commence in all regions from October 01st.

The launch event was attended by Kalutara District Members of Parliament Sanjeeva Ranasinghe, Dhanushka Ranganath, and Nandana Padmakumara, along with the regional political authority, Ministry of Plantations and Community Infrastructure Secretary Prabath Chandrakirthi, Additional Secretary Ms. Tharangi, Sri Lanka Tea Board Chairman Raj Obeyesekere, Sri Lanka Tea Board Tea Commissioner Mahesh, Small Tea Holdings Development Authority Chairman Nimal Udugampala, other officials, and small and medium-scale tea plantation owners.
