The Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs, Gamini Senarathna, stated that the election to select the Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy will be held on or around November 7th.

The term of the current Diyawadana Nilame ended on September 7th of this year. Accordingly, arrangements have been made to hold the vote to elect a new Diyawadana Nilame on or near November 7th of this year.

A term for a Diyawadana Nilame is 10 years, and the current Diyawadana Nilame was appointed to the position in 2005. It is reported that he has since been elected to the position on two other occasions.
