It is reported that to control the escalating violence, the responsibility for maintaining law and order in Nepal was handed over to the country’s military and security forces, effective from 10 PM yesterday (09).

Reports indicate that protesters have set fire to and destroyed several buildings, including the country’s parliament and the prime minister’s residence. The prime minister’s house, President Ram Chandra Paudel’s house, the office of Nepal’s ruling Congress party, and the residences of many other politicians have been burned and destroyed during protests, despite the curfew.

Protesters reportedly forcibly entered the Nepalese parliament complex, set fire to the buildings, destroyed the Nepalese Supreme Court, and then set fire to the Singha Durbar building, which houses the offices of Nepalese government ministers.

Following these protests, both Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and President Ram Chandra Paudel have reportedly resigned from their positions.

In light of the situation, the country’s airport has also been temporarily closed.

The protests, which began yesterday (09) in front of the parliament in the capital, Kathmandu, were in opposition to the Nepalese government’s decision to ban 26 social media networks.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a special advisory to Sri Lankans in Nepal to ensure their safety by staying indoors and not going outside. A special 24-hour hotline, 00977 โ€“ 9851048653, has also been provided to contact officials at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Nepal.
