Former President Ranil admitted to Prison Hospital

This is said to be the first time in the history of the country that an executive president has been arrested.

The arrest occurred when he arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department yesterday (22) morning to give a statement regarding an ongoing investigation.

After considering the facts presented by Additional Solicitor General Dilipa Peiris, who appeared for the CID, and President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne, along with other lawyers who appeared for   Ranil Wickremesinghe, Colombo Fort Magistrate Ms. Nilupuli Lankapura issued the order.

The CID launched this investigation into former President Ranil Wickremesinghe for allegedly using government funds for a private trip to London to attend his wife Maithree Wickremesinghe’s graduation ceremony during his tenure.
