The “Ekamitata-Govibimata”(One Hand – To the Farm) national program for cultivating fallow lands and the national program for the efficient cultivation of unproductive lands began today at the Wattegama Agrarian Service Centre. The event was guided by the Deputy Commissioner of Agrarian Development for the Kandy District and presided over by Minister K.D. Lalkantha, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation.

As part of the national program for cultivating unproductive lands, the Minister also participated in an event prepared in the Oya Digeyaya paddy field, located within the Udathalawinna Grama Niladhari Division. During this segment, suitable crops were identified for cultivation on these lands, and permits were issued to farmers. Additionally, symbolic aid and hand tractors were provided to farmers.

Concurrently, the Minister participated in the rehabilitation program for the Kottawewa Yayala canal under the “Wari Mahima – Ape Urumaya” (Irrigation Glory – Our Heritage) initiative. This project was inaugurated by the Minister in the Galapita Abegama area, which falls under the Kundasale Divisional Secretariat.

During his speech, the Minister made a special request to the public and the media, stating:

“We are holding these programs and laying foundation stones. These must succeed and move forward. Foundation stones sprouting won’t do any good. Therefore, as the public and as the media, let’s take responsibility and act. If programs like these don’t progress, you should investigate and inform society. Just as it’s essential to start, it’s equally vital to follow up and ensure they continue. Please fulfil that duty.”

All senior officials from the Department of Agrarian Development and members of the local political authority attended the event.
