Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra reportedly conducted a sudden inspection yesterday (01) of the Trincomalee city coastline and Uppuveli beach. He was accompanied by officials from the Urban Development Authority, Coast Conservation Department, Marine Environment Protection Authority, and the Municipal Council.
During the inspection, several issues posing serious risks to the marine environment and public health in the tourist zone were uncovered. Concerns regarding beach drainage and hospital waste disposal were also revealed.

Furthermore, a review of infrastructure, including the already approved water treatment project, was conducted. The Deputy Minister emphasized the urgent need to expedite this project to minimize environmental pollution. He stressed that these efforts are a commitment to making Trincomalee, a hub for both local and foreign tourists, a more attractive city.
The Deputy Minister further stated, “Developing our coastal areas and protecting their environment is of paramount importance, not only for the tourism sector but also for the well-wellbeing of the people of Trincomalee and future generations.”
