Today (June 10th) marks Poson full moon Poya day, commemorating the establishment of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
It has been 2332 years since Arahant Mahinda Thero and his missionary group arrived in Sri Lanka, after which Buddhism was established in the country.
It was on a Poson Poya day like today that Arahant Mahinda Thero, who arrived at the Mihintale rock in Anuradhapura, administered the Panchaseela (Five Precepts) to King Devanampiyatissa, who ruled the island at the time with his retinue and preached the Chulahatthipadopama Sutta.
Buddhist history also records that the six-colored Buddha rays first emanated from the Buddha while he was residing in the Ruwanweli Seya during the fourth week after his enlightenment, also on a Poson full moon Poya day.
