Government  to take legal action regarding harassment faced by tourists

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ruwan Ranasinghe

The Sri Lankan government acknowledges the incident involving Joseph James Weber, a well-known travel vlogger and owner of The Lost Joey, who was assaulted while traveling in Weligama, Matara. Weber himself recorded and shared the video of the incident on his own YouTube channel, bringing wider attention to the matter.

Following inquiries conducted by the Sri Lanka Police, it has been confirmed that the incident occurred on February 24, 2024. The suspected individual was immediately arrested on the same day and presented before the Matara Magistrate’s Court, where legal proceedings are still ongoing.

The Government of Sri Lanka deeply regrets the occurrence of this incident and remains committed to ensuring that justice prevails. Steps have already been taken to inform Weber of the government’s full support in all investigations and legal processes related to the case.

Sri Lanka places a high priority on the safety and well-being of tourists, recognizing the critical role the tourism sector plays in the nation’s economic development. The government has empowered all relevant institutions to take swift legal action against any individuals or organizations whose behavior undermines the country’s reputation and the collective effort to strengthen Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

We reaffirm our commitment to maintaining Sri Lanka as a safe and welcoming destination for travellers worldwide, ensuring that the integrity of the tourism sector remains protected.
