During the 78th Annual General Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) held in Geneva, Switzerland, the Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, met with the Director-General of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and held an extensive discussion on the current activities and future plans of the country’s health sector.

Several key issues were discussed in detail, including:The establishment of one thousand new primary healthcare centres in Sri Lanka.The WHO’s involvement in bringing together international organizations and donors dedicated to the advancement of Sri Lanka’s health sector. Finding solutions, based on WHO criteria, to the problem of Sri Lankan healthcare professionals migrating overseas. Reviewing the progress of WHO-implemented programs in Sri Lanka.
In addition, the Minister of Health and Mass Media invited the WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, to visit Sri Lanka in the near future. Furthermore, the Minister extended an invitation to the WHO Director-General to attend the South Asian Regional Conference to be held in Colombo in October 2025.
The meeting was attended by a delegation of officials, including Ms. Himali Arunatilaka, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva, and Ms. Nishanthini Victor, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva.
