Due to the inherent risks in their occupation, the fishing community faces a high probability of accidents affecting their lives. Recognizing this, the new government has paid special attention to this matter and is set to introduce an accident insurance scheme. The aim is to support the fisheries industry’s development and improve the living standards of fishermen by covering these accidents, thereby enabling fishermen to engage in the industry full-time.
“Good news for fishermen”
The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board has already introduced various insurance schemes for different agricultural sectors and related fields. This unique insurance scheme specifically for the fishing community is the latest insurance proposal introduced by the Board.
Accordingly, under the legal powers vested in the Board by the “Fisheries Pension and Social Security Benefits Act No. 23 of 1990” to implement pension schemes for the fishing community, it is expected to implement this annual renewable accident insurance coverage for them.
This insurance scheme will provide benefits to fishermen in situations of accidents, disabilities, and loss of life that may occur while engaged in their work at sea due to adverse weather conditions or any other emergency.
