– General Secretary Tilvin Silva
The General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Tilvin Silva, stated today (07) during a press conference that the National People’s Power (NPP) will not work to form councils in alliance with any party rejected by the people.
He further stated that they intend to form councils by joining with individuals who contested independently and won, if they are willing to join.
“The National People’s Power has managed to secure a majority in a large number of institutions. There’s an issue in some places. Although our party won more votes, in some areas, other parties have combined and have a higher number of members than the National People’s Power. So, even though the Compass (NPP) achieved a significant victory as a single party, if all the small parties that contested separately, unable to contest together, add up their results and say they have more, we don’t think that’s reality or fairness.
“We don’t unite with any party for the sake of power”
We saw in the past elections some who were planning to call a presidential election in August. There were those who thought they would become president in November. With these results, I think they have had the chance to let go of those dreams. A situation hasn’t arisen where anyone can gain control of a council. Some have received only one seat. Some have received two. Some have received three.
However, if all those who received one, two, or three seats gather together to form a single bloc and then say they will form councils, that is not democracy. Even if there’s no legal obstacle, these are groups rejected by the people. They are trying to mathematically show that they won.
Therefore, it’s very clear from a political standpoint that the Compass has won this election. So, we will definitely establish councils in all the institutions where we have won, and we have the ability to carry out the development projects we are undertaking in the country.”
We will not join hands with parties rejected by the people to form councils. We don’t know if it’s even possible for them to do so. In some places, we know there are many who contested independently. If such individuals come forward to help, we are willing to work with them.’’
