A Series of Projects for Advancing the Transport Sector

JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Senior Vice President Mr. Shohei Hara stated that there is a growing confidence that Sri Lanka is once again on the right path politically and socially.

During an official meeting held recently at the Parliamentary Leader’s Office with the participation of the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake, and representatives from JICA, Mr. Hara shared his views on Sri Lanka’s progress.

Advanced technological knowledge of the Japanese government for Sri Lankan youth

The representatives from JICA expressed their readiness to implement projects aimed at transferring Japan’s advanced technological knowledge and professional expertise to Sri Lankan youth. They emphasized plans to focus these initiatives particularly on the Northern and Eastern provinces. Such efforts, they noted, would significantly benefit the people in these regions—economically, socially, and professionally—after enduring years of hardship.

Minister Bimal Ratnayake expressed his gratitude to the Japanese government for resuming projects in Sri Lanka, especially as the country emerges from its financial difficulties. He emphasized that this trust would further strengthen the long-standing bilateral friendship between Japan and Sri Lanka.

The discussions also included a detailed review of projects related to the expansion of Bandaranaike International Airport in collaboration with JICA. Both parties deliberated on restarting these initiatives and ensuring their successful completion with transparency and competitiveness.

JICA representatives expressed their belief in the importance of ensuring that the procurement processes for these projects are conducted with transparency and fairness.

Furthermore, Minister Bimal Ratnayake stated that the government has recognized the need to develop Sri Lanka’s railway passenger transport services as well as the transportation of goods by train. A systematic plan is being developed, with a special focus on expanding the use of railways for transporting goods such as vegetables. He expressed optimism that JICA’s support would be instrumental in these efforts.

A senior delegation from JICA also participated in this meeting, which laid the groundwork for future collaborations in Sri Lanka’s transportation sector.
