Minister Bimal Ratnayake directs immediate removal of potential safety barrier at Ratmalana Airport

The Aircraft Owners & Operators Association of Sri Lanka recently alerted both the Government and the CAA about a 9-cubic-foot wall at the Gallupara boundary of Ratmalana Airport, which appears to be in violation of international airport regulations. In the event of even a minor technical error, the presence of this wall could pose a significant danger during an overrun or high-speed collision situation.

Citing a recent incident at Muan Airport in South Korea, which tragically claimed 179 lives, the Association expressed concern that a similar accident could occur at Ratmalana Airport if the wall remains in place. It has requested the construction of a simpler, breakable fence that would minimize damage and danger in an accident scenario.

In response to these concerns, Minister Ratnayake has assured that the Ministry will provide a solution as a matter of priority. Under the leadership of the Ministry Secretary, discussions with the relevant authorities are already underway, and steps will be taken immediately to remove the wall
