Supreme Court Judge Murdu Fernando is scheduled to take oath today as the new Chief Justice of the country.

This will be before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Justice Murdu Fernando was nominated for this position following the retirement of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya. She joined the Attorney General’s Department in 1985 and was promoted to the position of Deputy Solicitor General in 1997 and Additional Solicitor General in 2014.

Chief Justice to be sworn in today

In March 2018, she was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court, and on October 10, 2024, she was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice.

Justice Murdu Fernando will make history as the second woman to hold the position of Chief Justice in the country.
