According to a National Audit Office (NAO) audit, about 1,000 permits issued to migrant workers in Sri Lanka to import electric vehicles have been misused.
According to Auditor General W. P. C. Wickramaratne, a large number of Sri Lanka who was eligible for this scheme had not received permits.

For Sri Lankans working abroad, the Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry launched a remittance-based electric vehicle permit scheme during the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration. The program was put into effect between 2022 and 2023.Parliament has received the report and will soon table it.
