R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, the chairman of the Election Commission, stated that the general election vote count will start on November 14 at 4:15.
During a special press briefing at the Department of Government Information yesterday (12), he made updates on the general election and made these remarks.
The results from polling areas and district-level results will only be made public to the media following a re-checked and approval by the Election Commission, Ratnayake added. Thus, he asked everyone to hold off on releasing public the unofficial results of the election.

“Plans have been made to begin counting postal votes on November 14 at 4:15 p.m. Following the completion of the formal proceedings, the ballot boxes will be received from the respective polling stations at around 7:15 p.m., at which point the normal vote counting will begin. Following that, arrangements will be made in place to release the media of the results. Everyone is asked to hold off on revealing unofficial results till then,” he said.
Additionally, Ratnayake provided details regarding the vote-counting process, which will be conducted in three phases:
There are three stages to the vote counting process. First, each box’s votes are counted. Each recognized political party and independent group’s votes are then tallied. At The end of the process is to count the preferential votes each candidate earned, after which the number of MPs that can be elected from each party or group is calculated based on the votes. According to the most votes they received, the candidates from these parties and groups will be elected for positions as MPs, he explained.
According to the chairman of the Election Commission, the candidates from the parties and independent groups will be elected as Members of Parliament based on the number of votes they obtained.
