According to Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath, yesterday (29), a number of foreign tourists from various ethnic were conducting business here after arriving the country on a tourist visa.
“This has been occurring for some time, and we intend to investigate into it,” Herath said at the Cabinet press conference.
According to Minister Herath, the police were requesting hotel owners and the general public to report any known cases of tourists running illegal businesses. “This list will be updated every month,” he added.
“The government promises to take action against tourists who run illegal businesses.”
In response to a query regarding an Israeli-founded synagogue near Arugam Bay, Herath said adherents of Judaism hold certain religious ceremonies in October and selected various locations for their gathering. “They are temporarily utilising some sites. We’re examining into whether or not these places were properly reserved,” he explained.
The Cabinet Spokesman added that investigators were looking into whether certain individuals were intentionally disseminating false information in order that damaged the economy and tourism. When the National Security Council (NSC) meets on Tuesday, we will discuss this topic in more detail. He stated that the CID is currently investigating if specific organisations are purposefully spreading false information.
