A “Red” alert has been issued by the Department of Meteorology for the sea areas off the coasts of Puttalam, Galle, and Colombo, extending to Hambantota.

The advisory was issued this morning at 08.30 a.m. (12), and will remain in effect for the next twenty-four hours, until at 08.30 a.m. on Sunday (13).

The Met Department issues a “red alert” due to strong winds and rough seas.

It added that there will be times of extreme turbulence in the sea areas from the coast of Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, with gusts of up to 60–70 kmph.

According to the Met Department, wave heights in the sea areas off the coast of Colombo to Hambantota via Galle and Matara might rise by around 2.5–3.0 meters.

Thus, it is requesting that the fishing and naval communities exercise caution in this regard.
