Political parties and independent groups submitted 764 nomination papers for the 2024 general election from the 22 electoral districts on the island, according to Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake.
He did, however, state that 74 nomination papers were rejected down and that only 690 nomination papers from independent and political parties were accepted for the election.
After the nomination period concluded, yesterday evening (11), he told reporters that the Digamadulla electoral district received the highest number of nominations, at 72.
“Sri Lankan General Election 2024: 690 nominations for the general election were accepted, 74 were rejected.”
64 of these, he said were accepted while the other 8 nomination papers were rejected.
The Commissioner General further added that the districts of Polonnaruwa and Monaragala jointly had the lowest number of nominations—15 each.
Preference numbers, he revealed, will be made public soon.
Nominations for the General Election were accepted starting on October 4 and ended yesterday,( October 11) at noon. There remained time to submit objections related to the nominees until 1.30 p.m.
