More than forty thousand dengue cases have been reported so far this year in Sri Lanka, according to the latest numbers provided by the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) on Tuesday.

The NDCU stated that 40,109 cases had been reported with 19 fatalities so far, Xinhua news agency reported.

With 42.3 percent of cases, the western province had the largest number of cases reported overall.

The second-highest percentage of cases (12%) was found in the Northern Province, while the third-highest percentage (10.3%) was found in the central province. With 10,027 cases reported, the Colombo district has the highest number in the western province. With 4,698 cases, the Gampaha district in the province trails behind.

Additionally, the NDCU has identified ten dengue-risk areas. According to the NDCU, there were over 88,000 reported cases of dengue last year, with 57 reported deaths.
