Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake stated that nominations for the upcoming parliamentary election, which is set for November 14, 2024, are now being accepted by election officials. Ratnayake said that nominations would be accepted until noon on October 11 at the District Secretaries’ offices in 22 electoral districts.

Registered political parties were not required to put deposits for contesting general elections, Ratnayake said.

Nominations for the general election on November 14 are now being accepted.”

“However, independent groups want to place deposits amounting to Rs. 2,000 per candidate,” he said. On September 24, 2024, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake formally announced the date of the parliamentary elections through an Extraordinary Gazette.

There are 225 members of Sri Lanka’s Parliament; 196 are elected by direct vote, while the remaining 29 are appointed via the National List, which is based by the percentage of votes each political party or independent group receives in the general election.

2020 saw the last general election.
