Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya’s proposal to form a committee to provide recommendations for limiting the privileges, entitlements, and allowances given to MPs, ministers, and former presidents that unduly burden the Treasury was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday, the 30th of September. The committee was also tasked with coming up with alternate approaches. The proposal was to submit a detailed report within two months.
In her roles as Minister of Justice, Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya presented the idea.
“Committee to impose limits on retired politician’s benefits is headed by a retired SC judge.”
According to Minister Vijitha Herath, the spokesperson for the Cabinet, the MPs, ministers, and previous presidents currently enjoy a variety of benefits and privileges, such as salary, allowances, pensions, official residences, cars, employees, office supplies, and security guards.
He pointed out that the government, which is financed by taxes paid by the general population, is heavily burdened financially by these advantages. Consequently, the committee designated below has been given the task of examining these benefits and suggesting ways to reduce them: The committee consists of retired Supreme Court Judge K.T. Chithrasiri (Chairman), retired Ministry Secretary D. Dissanayaka, and retired district secretary Jayantha C.T. Bulumulla.
