Red alert issued by the Department of Meteorology

The Department of Meteorology has issued a red alert warning for heavy rain. According to the notice issued at 9:30 AM today (15), this warning is in effect until 8:30 AM tomorrow for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts. The Department further states that the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka still persists, and the system is expected to move away from the island within the next 36 hours.

During this period, very heavy rains of about 150 mm may occur in some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, while heavy rains exceeding 100 mm are expected in certain areas of the Galle and Matara districts. The Department of Meteorology advises the public to take necessary measures to minimize risks from strong winds and lightning that may accompany heavy thundershowers. It is also noted that the highest rainfall during the past 24 hours, totaling 175.0 mm, was recorded in the Avissawella area.
