“Circular Released for World Environment Week 2026”
Preparations are underway to commemorate the 54th World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. World Environment Day has been celebrated globally since 1972, inspiring people worldwide toward environmental conservation.
In alignment with the global theme “Urgent Climate Action,” Sri Lanka will implement a nationwide series of practical programs under the banner “Dalu Lanna Idadenna”, driven by the vision “A Sustainable Biosphere – An Ever-Green Life.” The primary objective of this year’s program is to fast-track measures required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and manage rising global temperatures, effectively turning the environmental pledges made in 2025 into practical successes.
To mark this significant occasion, the period from May 30 to June 5 has been declared “National Environment Week.” Throughout this week, daily programs will be organized across various sectors, focusing on attitude development, cleanliness, air pollution control, biodiversity conservation, water resource management, and coastal cleanups. Drawing from the lessons learned during the recent ‘Ditwa’ cyclone disaster, special attention will also be given to restoring the upper catchment areas and ecosystems of the central highlands to build an environment that can resiliently withstand future climate shocks.
The collaboration of the public and private sectors, youth, and civil organizations is crucial to fulfilling this national responsibility. During National Environment Week, conservation efforts will be carried out through initiatives such as tree planting, promoting renewable energy usage, minimizing plastic consumption, and leveraging digitization. We look forward to the active contribution of the entire populace in this noble endeavor to foster an environmentally conscious generation for the future.
