“Maharagama woman nabbed in multi-million foreign job scam”
Suspect also ran a student visa firm
Officers of the Special Investigation Unit of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) have arrested a woman for defrauding over 10 million rupees by promising jobs in Albania and Canada.
The suspect had collected money for foreign employment while operating a student visa agency named “Global Educate Consultancy” in the Maharagama area as a front. According to complaints received by the Bureau, she had defrauded individuals from various parts of the country of an amount exceeding 10 million rupees.
Bureau investigation officers raided the institution, which was being operated fraudulently without a valid SLBFE license. During the raid, several documents, including employment contracts, were taken into official custody. Following her production before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court, the suspect was remanded until April 9th.
In a separate incident, investigation officers conducted a raid on a fraudulent agency named “ASPA” in Mirigama, following three complaints regarding the collection of money for jobs in Japan. Officers managed to trap the racketeers by using an undercover agent.
As a result, two suspects—a woman from Minuwangoda and a man from Ja-Ela—were arrested. They were produced before the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court on April 7th. The court ordered the first suspect to be remanded until April 21st, while the second suspect was released on bail.
