Job Scams Across the Country Under the Guise of Visa Consultancy

Recently, there has been a surge in reports regarding fraudulent foreign employment agencies operating under the guise of “visa consultancy firms” to swindle money. In response, the Police Unit of the Special Investigations Division of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has expanded its raids against such institutions.

Two complaints were lodged with the Bureau regarding an establishment named NG Consultants Services in the Ja-Ela/Kandana area. Operating as a visa consultancy, the firm allegedly defrauded two residents of Kelaniya and Veyangoda of Rs. 3.6 million by promising truck driving jobs in Romania.

Bureau investigation officers raided the premises and arrested the owner. Laptops used for drafting employment contracts and documents were seized as evidence.

The suspect was produced before the Welisara Magistrate’s Court and remanded in custody.

On February 18, a woman linked to this racket was summoned to the Bureau for questioning. The victims’ passports were found in her possession and confiscated. Following her statement, she was arrested, produced before the Welisara Magistrate, and remanded until February 25.

On February 17, 2026, officers raided another establishment named A & T Consultants in Negombo. This agency allegedly used social media to advertise European jobs while operating under the pretext of visa consultancy.

The raid followed a complaint from an individual who had paid Rs. 5.5 million for a promised nursing job in Canada, which never materialized.

The owner was arrested, and several employment contracts and a passport were seized from the location.

The suspect was produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court. Upon pleading guilty and agreeing to pay Rs. 250,000.00 immediately, the suspect was released on bail.
