Special police notice on procedures to follow if a mobile phone is lost or misplaced

The Police Media Division has issued a statement to the public regarding the procedures to be followed in the event a mobile phone is lost or stolen. According to the notification:

  1. Immediate Deactivation of the SIM Card

The first step is to deactivate the SIM card through your respective service provider. This prevents third parties from using the device for illegal, anti-social, or unlawful activities. Furthermore, deactivating the SIM makes it easier to track and recover the device if it falls into someone else’s hands.

  1. Importance of the IMEI Number

When filing a complaint with the Sri Lanka Police regarding a lost or stolen mobile phone, it is vital to provide the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number.

  1. Public Responsibility

It is the responsibility of every individual to keep a record of their phone’s IMEI number and other service details before an incident occurs. You can find your device’s IMEI number by dialing the short code: *#06#

  1. Digital Registration for Recovery

The Sri Lanka Police has introduced a software-based system to assist in locating lost mobile phones. The public is encouraged to visit the official website ineed.police.lk to register their details for this service.
