It is reported that the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to completely waive cremation and burial fees for residents within the city limits. This proposal was presented by the Mayor based on the views of council members and received unanimous approval during the subsequent debate.

Reports further state that a fee of Rs. 10,000 had been charged previously, causing significant hardship to low-income earners. Accordingly, cremation and burial charges will be fully waived for resident service-seekers at the Borella, Jawatte, Madampitiya, and Kirulapone cemeteries.
