  • An Opportunity to obtain a Driving License without visiting a Motor Traffic office

Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake, emphasized, “To mark the first anniversary of the National People’s Power (NPP) government, the National Institute of Transport Medicine is prepared to give a gift to the public. That is the opportunity to obtain one’s license without having to visit a Motor Traffic Office.”

“According to the previous system, people had to come to the Institute of Transport Medicine to obtain their medical report and then go back to the Motor Traffic Offices to get their driving license. However, starting today, a system has been successfully implemented where people who come to obtain new driving licenses or renew their licenses can pay the necessary fees and receive a temporary driving license right here at the Institute of Transport Medicine,” the Minister stated.

The Minister made these comments while participating in an event held recently (30) at the National Institute of Transport Medicine in Nugegoda.

A Gift to the public from the Institute of Transport Medicine

Further commenting at the inaugural event, which introduced the change from the previous system to provide temporary driving licenses directly from the Institute of Transport Medicine for the welfare of the public, Minister Ratnayake said:

“Through this new methodology, people who come to obtain a driving license will save money, time, and effort that would otherwise be spent traveling to Werahera or another Department of Motor Traffic office after getting the medical certificate from this location. Moreover, the time taken to obtain their temporary driving license from this location is a very short period of about 7 minutes. In the future, this time will be limited to around 5 minutes. Within the next few months, we will be able to implement this new system in other parts of the country as well. Our main goal is to ensure a comfortable lifestyle for the people. New systems like this will be implemented day by day to achieve that.”

The event was attended by the Commissioner-General of Motor Traffic, the Chairperson of the National Institute of Transport Medicine, Arosha Vidyabhushana, and a large number of senior officials from the relevant institutions.
