Seven monks have reportedly passed away in an accident that occurred last night (24) when a cable car (dakkuwa) at the Na Uyana Aranya Senasanaya in Melsiripura crashed.
Thirteen monks were in the cable car at the time of the accident. The critically injured monks have been admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
The accident reportedly took place around 9:00 PM last night (24), as the monks were traveling to their meditation huts after completing religious observances at the Na Uyana Aranya Senasanaya.
It is reported that of the 13 monks in the cable car, seven lost their lives. The six injured monks have been admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital and Polgahawela Hospital for treatment.

Among the deceased monks are three foreign nationals: one Russian, one Romanian, and one Indian.
Police suspect the accident was caused by a support cable on the cable car breaking. The Pansiyagama Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
