A Sri Lankan woman was recently arrested by customs officials at Jaffna International Airport for attempting to illegally smuggle gold into the country.

The woman, who arrived on a flight from Chennai on the 21st, was found to have two capsule-shaped containers hidden on her person. The containers held a substance believed to be gold, weighing 1,002.2 grams.

The suspect is a 41-year-old resident of Colombo 12. She was presented before the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded for 14 days.
