Yesterday (14), a senior security officer at the Katunayake Airport was arrested by a group of airport customs officials while he was attempting to smuggle 24-carat gold biscuits worth LKR 215,24,575.35 out of the airport. He had hidden the gold in his legs.

The individual, who also serves as the chairman of the Civil Aviation Security Services Organization, is a 54-year-old resident of Kandawala, Negombo.

The report states that the individual was arrested by customs officials while exiting through the special window for airport staff. He had skillfully concealed 51 24-carat gold biscuits by wrapping them in special bandages on his legs and covering them with his socks.

The seized gold biscuits weigh 5 kg and 941 g. Katunayake Airport customs officials are currently conducting further investigations to determine whether the gold was handed over to him by someone else for smuggling or if he has been involved in this racket for a long time.
