The cultural landscape associated with Sri Lanka’s tea industry, which has existed for over 150 years, is a region rich in living heritage and values.

The Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Central Cultural Fund, and Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka are working together to get this region included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Accordingly, the first step to include Sri Lanka’s tea cultural landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List is to get it on the Tentative Nomination List.

The proposal prepared for this purpose is set to be submitted to UNESCO. This proposal was handed over to the Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs at the ministry’s auditorium this afternoon (19).

The first international conference on the Tea Cultural Landscape is scheduled to be held in Nuwara Eliya from November 15 to 17. It is expected to provide a crucial approach to getting the Sri Lankan Tea Cultural Landscape included on the UNESCO Tentative List.

During the event, the minister also launched the website for the conference.

Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, Dr. Nilan Cooray, Professor M. S. M. Aslam of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, and Dean of the Faculty of Management at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, Professor Athula Gnanapala, were among those who attended the event.
