According to Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya, a formal program is being implemented to suppress underworld activities.
He stated this to the media yesterday (17) after visiting Mahanayaka Theros in Kandy. The IGP said that they are working with the support of the tri-forces and the public to curb these crimes, and that some underworld activities and drug trafficking have received the assistance of certain police officers and political patronage.

Stating that the current political environment is very good for establishing law and that he has not received any political influence, the IGP said that he would never issue orders to conceal or ignore any crime.
IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya further commented, “Drug trafficking and underworld killings are not recent occurrences. They have received certain political patronage and the support of some police officers. We have investigated the shootings and arrested the suspects. Tri-forces personnel and drug addicts have been used for this. The people carrying out these operations are cowardly individuals who have fled abroad. We are working with international partners for this. We have a planned program with the support of the public and the tri-forces. We are also implementing a more formal program moving forward.”
