Acting Inspector General of Police, Priyantha Weerasooriya, has been approved as the 37th Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Sri Lanka.
The Constitutional Council gave its approval yesterday (12) for the recommendation made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The decision was made during a meeting of the Constitutional Council, chaired by Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne.
“Priyantha Weerasooriya appointed New IGP”
The President had previously recommended Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya for the post after the proposal to remove former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon was passed in Parliament. Following this approval, Priyantha Weerasooriya, who has served as Acting IGP since September 2024, will now officially assume the position.
According to sources, it is a special moment that Priyantha Weerasooriya, who joined the police force in 1988 as a Police Constable, has been appointed as the IGP in 2025. He becomes the first officer in the history of the Police Department to join as a constable and rise to the position of IGP.
Born on February 9, 1969, in Dodangoda, Kalutara, IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya joined the Police Department in 1988. He received his higher education from Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and the Faculty of Law at the University of Colombo and has also worked as a sworn-in lawyer.
