Cabinet paper to stop loose coconut oil sales

Measures to Prevent Sale of Adulterated Oil

Shantha Ranawaka, Chairman of the Coconut Development Authority, announced that a cabinet paper has been submitted to halt the sale of loose, unpackaged coconut oil in the market.

Ranawaka stated that various types of oils are currently being sold in the market under the guise of coconut oil, and the public reports that consuming these oils leads to non-communicable diseases. For this reason, he emphasized the need for genuine coconut oil to be released to the market in proper packaging, including all necessary details such as the manufacturer.

The Chairman further added that this measure was taken to prevent the sale of adulterated oils being marketed as coconut oil. He also mentioned that the ban will be implemented after a grace period of several months to allow businesses to comply with the new regulations.
