In a move set to significantly benefit Sri Lankans residing in Cyprus, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism has decided to reopen a Sri Lankan Embassy in the Republic of Cyprus, effective July 20. The Cypriot government has granted approval for the embassy’s reopening, and a delegation appointed by the Ministry is scheduled to depart for Cyprus on July 15 to commence operations.
“Sri Lankan Embassy in Cyprus reopens”
Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the decision to re-establish the Sri Lankan Embassy in Cyprus was made in response to persistent requests from Sri Lankan citizens living there. He expressed that the new embassy will not only provide essential services to Sri Lankans but also facilitate new employment opportunities and increased trade investments.
There are approximately 15,000 Sri Lankans in Cyprus. The previous embassy in Cyprus was closed several years ago, forcing Sri Lankans to seek consular services from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Ankara, Turkey. The new government, through the intervention of Minister Vijitha Herath, was able to initiate this mission service in response to the demands of Sri Lankans in Cyprus.
In addition to the Cyprus Embassy, a Sri Lankan High Commission was also opened in New Zealand in January this year.
