Elon Musk, the world-renowned entrepreneur, announced on his ‘X’ account that the Starlink internet service is now active in Sri Lanka.

Starlink is reportedly several times faster than the existing fibre internet service and offers the ability to access the service from anywhere in the world.

On August 14, 2024, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) granted Starlink Lanka (Pvt) Ltd a ‘Telecommunication Service Provider’ license to offer internet services in Sri Lanka using satellite technology.

The Starlink internet satellite system was introduced to the world in 2019, and it is currently used by over 130 countries.

To provide Starlink internet service globally, over 7,000 satellites have already been launched into orbit. This number is projected to increase to 12,000 by 2026 and further to 30,000 in the future.

SpaceX states that Starlink boasts high download speeds ranging from 50Mbps to 250Mbps. The home system is designed to come as an easy-to-install router.
