Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake, stated that passengers have expressed their willingness to participate in the life-saving program by wearing seat belts.
The Minister exchanged views with passengers in several locations regarding the seat belt law. He mentioned that their consent was expressed during his participation in a driver awareness program at the Makumbura Expressway entrance.
“Government aims to save lives by ensuring road safety”
The government’s objective is to ensure road safety and protect lives. This initiative will be implemented in several phases. The highest number of road accident fatalities in Sri Lanka is due to motorcycle accidents. Therefore, the government is ready to take new measures regarding helmet standards. The Minister also stated that discussions will be held with helmet manufacturers and importers in the future.
Regulations already exist regarding the number of passengers that can travel in three-wheelers. Bimal Ratnayake believes it’s important to enforce these regulations. The Minister assured that the program to ensure road safety and protect people’s lives will be implemented with care and understanding. He made this statement after distributing awareness leaflets to drivers and passengers. The awareness program took place this afternoon at the Makumbura Expressway entrance.
